OREGON RIVALRY RELAY - AN IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT
Thank you for your interest in the Oregon Rivalry Relay.
I have been struggling for a while on what to do with this relay race. I've ultimately decided to not stage the ORR going forward. Here is why:
- Since the pandemic, some costs have sky-rocketed. The worst is portable toilets. Prices have tripled since 2019. I was not comfortable increasing the registration price after what had been posted.
- I also stage two overnight relays in Colorado. It cost me money out of my pocket to stage the relays in 2021. This year, I probably made less than minimum wage when you consider how much time I spend on them. That has sucked the energy I have had right out of me.
- So, I have decided not to risk the financial future of my company with an out-of-state race (I live in Colorado).
I've been staging relay races since 2004. It's been a labor of love, but also how I have earned my living. I never wanted to be a corporate-minded race management company with huge races (i.e. a Ragnar or Hood to Coast); I was more than happy with the two to three well organized races I staged each year. They were profitable and worth my time and effort.
After adding up the projected expenses for the ORR, it just didn't make financial sense (iffy I would break even) to continue to stage this race.
I apologize that I won't be staging the ORR this year. I have attempted to find a local race director interested in purchasing the race, but I have not been successful so far.
Thank you again for your support and I wish you continued exciting and challenging running adventures.
Sincerely, Paul Vanderheiden
